A Symphony Of Two (2023)

Synopsis

The series is framed as entries from Chrystal’s diary. At its emotional center is a brutal imbalance: Chrystal’s feelings for Irene have been festering and strong for years, while Irene agrees to date her in part because she is going through a bi-curious phase, thinks Chrystal is “kinda cute,” and is curious - but her attraction is mild and she is never sure what to do with it. Irene does not enter the relationship with anything like Chrystal’s intensity.

The show was always intended to lean sad and dark. Their romance was designed to become a trainwreck: Chrystal head-over-heels, Irene only partly present emotionally. That mismatch was meant to fuel escalating problems across the run, leading toward a painful breakup near the end that would leave Chrystal shattered - while they would still remain friends afterward. The two released chapters only begin that road; the heaviest material was planned for later episodes.

Each chapter was conceived as its own vignette from a season of Chrystal’s life as she finally moves from confession to dating Irene - after years of carrying a crush from their school days - before the story could turn fully toward the fallout.

Production

The story was planned to unfold across roughly fifteen episodes. Production stopped after two when behind-the-scenes creative differences emerged between the production and the story consultant - who was also voicing Chrystal at the time, Victoria Whitson.
