RACER GIRL (2022)
Synopsis
RACER GIRL is a coming-of-age story about Irene Falkenberry, a young woman caught between family pressure, and work that does not fit her, while she tries to figure out who she is meant to become. The one thread that keeps pulling her is cars and speed - but everyday life gets in the way: a controlling, disrespectful relationship, friends who want her to open up, and mechanic jobs where she is underestimated instead of supported.
When she leaves that relationship and starts searching for something that feels truly hers, televised professional racing - and a rookie driver who clearly loves what he does - offers the first concrete picture of a life she wants. (Dawson Miller is that inspiration in-universe.) With her closest friends behind her, she has to separate the fear of reckless driving others pushed on her from the thrill of speed she chooses for herself. Restoring a neglected family motorcycle becomes part of claiming her own path; skepticism at home and friends moving away test how far she will commit.
The story is framed as Irene sharing this stretch of her past with someone who matters to her in the present. At its core it is about finding direction after feeling lost, turning a love of driving into an identity, and moving from riding along on someone else’s choices to steering her own.
Production
Like FASTLANE (2021), RACER GIRL was shot without a script, which led to a messy plot structure, uneven pacing, and continuity issues.
Joy Hayward voices a news reporter.
Brigette Rose was considered for the role of Irene Falkenberry during casting before being cast as Leah Monroe.
